When Your Toddler Doesn't Want to Eat

Do you have a child who started as a picky toddler and got worse from there? Do you endure food demands? Have you tried "tough love" to no avail? Learn about normal--and not so normal childhood eating habits here.

When Your Toddler Doesn't Want to Eat:

Toddlers are a unique breed when it comes to food. They're starting to assert their independence, which can be terrible for a parent trying to feed them. My son ate all the foods I gave him, until one day...he'd had enough. We endured weeks of only noodles, followed by scoops of peanut butter. Old-time favorites like avocados would be thrown at my face. FamilyDoctor.org has some helpful guidelines for toddler eating. Sometimes we feel we should be feeding them more than they need.

  • Rule of thumb is one tablespoon of food for every year of age.
  • You might have to cook foods separate if they simply won't eat.
  • You should not force kids to eat or use rewards like dessert to entice eating.
  • Establish routines and use cues, "In five minutes it's dinner time."
  • Use dinner time as a positive family interaction.
